japanese candy friday: white peach kitkat

White Peach KitKat

The plum trees are blossoming and springtime KitKats are here.

White Peach (Shiro-momo) KitKats are pretty, that is true. The milk chocolate coating is marbled with a pink, peach-flavored white chocolate and the pink and yellow packaging looks fresh and appealing. These would make lovely hina-matsuri gifts or good-luck presents for students taking entrance exams, which is probably what they are intended to be.

Unfortunately, they don't taste very good.

While they are much better than Pumpkin KitKat -- another milk-chocolate-covered KitKat I had a lot of hope for, but which had an acidic flavor that reminded me disturbingly of vomit -- the floral, fake-peach taste just doesn't do it for me. It reminds me of sophomore year of high school and the girls who doused themselves in peach-scented body splash from Bath and Body Works. Or of air fresheners.

While I do understand the KitKat Kollector's Kraze (KKK...K for short) and am not opposed to trying out new KitKat flavors, I still feel slightly disgruntled about it. Of the ten or so special edition flavors I've tried since moving here, only two have been good enough to make me want to buy them again (KitKat Bitter and Chocolatier Strawberry & Nuts). That's an 80% Rate of Indifference, rather dismal numbers for a candy everyone gets so excited about.

...It is really pretty, though, isn't it?

I wonder if they have taste tests and, if they do, if maybe your candy palate differs from the rest of Japan. FYI I am surrounded by "research" organic snack products at my office. Too bad organic doesn't mean less sugar.

Ah, the dreaded KitKat Fatigue Syndrome ... I had it a while back as well when I kept trying substandard limited edition flavors.

I liked the Stawberry & Nuts flavor too. I haven't tried my bitter one yet, but I have high hopes.

I'm such a hardcore member of the KKK club...I'm obsessed with the Japanese Kitkats. It's a shame this one wasn't up to par....I'm still tempted to try it, especially since I loved the pumpkin version. ;)

Have you tried the winter strawberry one? I just LOVED it. The best strawberry one yet IMHO.

Those stripes don't look too inviting, I must say. Asian candies with stripes on their body usually mean stay away. Like poisonous plants to animals.. ;)
Love your blog, I've been meaning to de-lurk and say hi since January, but I was caught up... so hi! :D

This flavor was quite gross, wasn't it? So sad. But, I, too will keep trying all the new flavors (even if we all know they're probably going to be disappointments). Don't give up hope yet, Anjali! I keep telling myself that persistence will pay off. It must.

so it's kinda like the yankee candle of candy?

I have to agree with you- the peach flavour wasn't the best.
I still maintain that the lemon cheesecake flavour is unbeatable...

Do you typically like pumpkin? Because a chocolate-pumpkin Kit-Kat sounds so good, I don't want it to be bad.

I LOVE pumpkin, so I also really wanted it to be good. But it wasn't. I tried it both in the usual bar form and as KitKat Babies (little crunchy balls, kind of the Raisinets of KitKats). Both were pukey. Sadly.

Anjali! I got your package!! Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!! Oishikatta yo! :D I took pictures and I'll upload them onto my Flickr account and I'll try and post them in my blog for you too. :3 Thank you again SO MUCH! Ichigo ga ichiban desu nee? :)

That chocolate is truly Beautiful, shame it doesn't taste like that too :(
thanks for the reviews , I am a candy lover and your notes are very useful :)
