just 49,948 words to go

redflowers.jpg

Once upon a time I lived in a house I loved with a person I loved and I was very happy. Then one day I fell in love with his best friend and tore it all apart.

Now I am writing a novel about it. In one month.

(No, I'm not crazy.)

100-word summary of the novel thus far

When I asked Word to spit out a 100-word summary, this is what I got, crazy spacing and all. I'm a little disturbed that it looks like a poem written by someone on drugs.

“No,” said Rosie. Josh asked. Matt looked terrified. “Josh, no. “Is that Matt?” Rosie nodded. “Hi Matt!” Rosie

Rosie says: matt!

Matt says: hey! Matt says: ugh.

Rosie says: yeah?

Rosie says: sure. Rosie says: yes?

Rosie says: ooo! Rosie says: sure.

Matt says: really?!

Rosie says: yup.

matt

“Here, Rosie. Christ,” said Matt.
Matt suggested it… Rosie

There was nothing in her head but Matt Matt Matt.

Matt was making Rosie a mix CD. No…” said Rosie. Rosie

"Shut up,” said Rosie.
Matt stood next to Rosie.
Love,
Rosie, you are right. Josh

Rosie said.

i know, i know

I haven't been good about updating you. But I'm writing 1,800 words a day, so please forgive me. Here, to tide you over, in no particular order, are some of the things currently fueling me:

+ the Arrested Development Season 2 DVDs. I'm trying to very slowly watch the episodes, to delay the terribly sad day when I wake up and have no more episodes of Arrested Development to watch.

+ my obsession with buying a new type of candy whenever I go to the grocery store. I mean, could YOU resist this?

meltykiss_t.jpg

Unfortunately, as with most of the candies I buy mainly for their packaging, Meltykiss is pretty gross.

+ Italo Calvino's If On a Winter's Night a Traveler. A really amazing book. It's about a reader (you) who just wants to finish the new Italo Calvino book, but through a series of increasingly bizarre mishaps, you (the reader) are not only prevented from finishing that book, you're prevented from finishing every other novel you end up reading in pursuit of finishing the first book. Confused? Every other chapter is a new novel, with its own compelling plot and unique style. And it's funny to boot.

+ the autumn weather, still. I'm going to Kyoto on Monday to see the foliage. Pictures coming soon!

you, me and everyone else who goes to kyoto in autumn

This weekend I went to Kyoto and saw the fall foliage at Arashiyama, Kodai-ji and Kiyomizu-dera. I must admit I thought the idea of walking around at night looking at the illuminated autumn leaves was strange and somehow a little false, but it was beautiful to see everything all lit up. I don't know about that blue light shooting into the sky at Kiyomizu-dera, though. It made all my pictures there look like they came from the future.

More pictures to be posted on Flickr soon. For now, I have 13,000 more words to write by the end of the month!
